River Kwai Hotel

Accommodation and facilities:
There is a problem with music late at night which makes it difficult to sleep. The air conditioning units are very noisy. A kettle and coffee in the room would be good. W-fi should be automatic. Staff need to have better English.

Accommodation and facilities:
A big hotel with an even bigger breakfast buffet, good location as close to bus station and railway station After these two points everything is downhill as far as the hotel goes. First surprise front desk people can hardly say a few words in English. Second surprise free Internet for only 3 hours a day. This was never disclosed by SiameServices nor the hotel and amounts to misrepresentation Awful hand basin tap which when turned on would spray water all over. Plastic underneath the bed mattress which creaked the whole night long but the paper thin walls and the parties in adjoining rooms BOTH helped in preventing you from sleeping PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS ? Dirty dilapidated room, torn shower curtain were the other highlights

Reservation service:
You should have made it clear that Internet was NOT free and that there was a charge after 3 hours. Please investigate your facts thoroughly before you state them Partially stating facts can amount to misrepresentation nevertheless

Be careful to some rooms which are located just above the main karaoke in town ! Because if you are in one of these rooms, you can not sleep because the sound is really too strong... I have admit that some voices are not pleasant to hear ^ ^ But a very good hotel overall. Breakfast buffet plentiful, many choices.

Old rustic charms! Translates into: Broken almirah door (I have photos), Torn curtains, worn carpets, wash basing tap spilling water on you. However, great location being very close to and in between the railway station, bus stand, night market, war cemetery and River Kwai death railway bridge. Coffee machine with coffee/tea sachets is a standard service these days but not at this hotel. Despite written confirmation by SiameServices, they refused to provide the coffee maker, though they provided free hot water in thermos. Fairly good services including free wi-fi, swimming pool and gym. great interiors and collection of nice paintings and murals are over once you leave the reception area. The themed bar with live Rodeo music seemed nice as I did not use the services. Breakfast was average. If you want to connect to history, its nice. Howeevr if you prefer nice maintenance, young courteous staff and standard services, go for a newly constructed hotel. However the hotel did not honour the promise of providing water heater/ coffee maker.

Reservation service:
Booking was smooth and even considered my request for change in dates and promptly provided the revised confirmation voucher.

The hotel looked promising when we went in and staff were efficient. The main part of our room was fine, but the bathroom was a bit dilapidated both decoration wise and there were a few broken tiles and some mould on the walls with some frayed old paintwork. In their favour they do appear to be doing up the rooms bit by bit. Staff were very nice and helpful. There were no internet services after 11pm as their cafe closed around that time, but they do have free wifi if you have your own computer. The hotel is about 5km from the bridge, but handy for the food market every night which is well worth a visit and things like the bus station and the TAT office. The breakfast wasn't up to much, although there was a lot of choice the quality was not great, although not appalling. The main problem was on our second night at 1.20am we awoke to the sound of running water and it was literally raining in our bathroom. This was interesting, as it wasn't raining outside! 3 people came from reception who didnt really speak much english but who were terribly concerned. They bought a technician who declared that the problem couldn't be fixed. The manager was very willing to please and relocated us in a better grade room. He also allowed us to leave our belongings in the rainy room, so we could tidy up in the morning. Unfortunately the better grade room, while it looked very nice, smelled very peculiar and one of us had a damp bed. So the next morning we requested to change again and were given a room that was the same as the rainy room, but luckily minus the rainy bathroom! Again the bathroom was a bit worse for wear but much better than our first one. All in all it didn't get in the way of our enjoying Kanchanaburi but I would recommend that you have a look at the room before you take it.

The hotel is only a short distance to one of the war cemeteries and the excellent Thai - Burma Railway museum across from the cemetery.

The breakfast had a lot to offer, if you re used to eating thaifood for breakfast that is. The staff looked friendly, however they couldn't speak so good english. When I asked for the internetcode I had to talk to 3 diffrent staffmembers until they understood what I wanted. Many things was below expectations, but the poolarea was very nice I must say.

For a 3 star the hotel was great. We really liked the location as we were able to walk to a lot of places during the day and then just got on the back of a bike to visit places farther away, which was great fun! If we were to go back we would stay there again. On the advice of some friends we did request a quiet room, although we could still hear the base of the music which wasn't too bad for us as we stayed out mostly, it did finish at a reasonable time. The service provided by guest relations and reception was very helpful and informative.

This is about my fourth stay at the hotel in three years. I cannot fault the place. Perfect location, just 1Km from the bus terminal in one direction, and the railway station and War Cemetery in the other. Was rather disappointed with the Thai breakfast this time around, although there is still the best breakfast choice I have ever seen at any Thai hotel. Staff have limited English - the hotel seems to be mainly for wealthier Thai people to stay at. Your other options are resorts up along the Kwai river, which you will need to book through tour agents in order to get there unless you are driving yourself. But I love the place - I do not go to Thailand to mix with Westerners - I do that back here in Aussie all the time. If you want to tour the Tiger Temple and Hellfire Pass etc, hire a songtiew (two bench car) at the bus station. You should pay B700 for a half day, and twice this for a full day. You go where YOU want to go, not where the tour operator wants to take you! (I hired a half day to the Tiger Temple for the above price).I rate the hotel service as excellent, but then, I speak a few words of Thai, which helps.

This is a three star hotel so one shouldn't expect more. On the plus side location is good especially if you don't have your own transport, the room was comfortable with lovely large feather pillows, swimming pool big with pleasant sun deck and there is a small fitness room. On the minus side, breakfast is adequate though not inspiring, although the coffee is surprisingly good but they insist on serving sweetened milk. If you have a room facing the front don't even think about trying to sleep until the disco finishes at 2:00am. When checking in ask for a quiet room at the back. Check in staff were helpful and spoke good English. Internet available at 80 baht per hour.

The breakfast was amazing. I paid for a week of breakfast on my credit card so it felt like I was getting food for free. The rooms were nice equipped with TV, chairs, and beds. The beds were comfy. My boyfriend and I had two single beds but the bed had wheels on them so we could push them together. The front desk helped me find the bus number I needed. The hotel is not far from the bus station which was really helpful to me as we did not have too much money for taxis. We took the bus every time we went somewhere! The decor is beautiful in the breakfast/dinning room. I love how they include plant life on the outside windows where you eat. Their sweet and sour pork is amazing. The sauce tastes good on anything. The only thing that could be a problem for someone tall is that the bathroom ceiling isn't high but since I m average height it was fine. It was a magical adventure there. We went to Tiger Temple twice, Elephant park in Sio Yok, Erawan Waterfall, and Safari Park. We didn't need a tour guide to get around just used our wits and the bus. There was of course a language barrier but that is to be expected going into a different country.

As far as anchanaburi is concerned, this is probably one of the better hotels in town, but that is not saying much! The staff on the front desk and bell-hops are VERY UNFRIENDLY and we seemed to be an annoyance more than a paying customer. The breakfast was horrid; a huge selection, but everything inedible. It is like the same food was recycled from the prior week. The restaurant staff were also rude and unhelpful. The lady at the pool was lovely. The security guards at the front car park were great. All other staff need a real wake-up call!! The room was in need of a fix. Light fittings broken and some lights not working. The bathroom had bad water pressure and was not entirely clean. I would not want to stay there again.

Accommodation and facilities:
The River Kwai Hotel was showing its age and the room and bathroom were basic but for the price it was great value for money. The pool area was very nice as was the breakfast and the breakfast staff although the reception staff were a little cool I thought. It is quite a long way from the River Kwai tourist stuff - I thought their map was very misleading on this point - and we started walking toward this area hoping to be able to grab a passing taxi but there were none! Finally a public tuk tuk stopped for us. There is a great bar across the road from the hotel, small but air conditioned with very cold beer and excellent inexpensive meals.

All went smoothly, not problems.

Ok for the money, good location for sightseeing. Deskstaff is not so nice, (or maybe they just don´t like farangs), but not unfriendly either, didn´t seem to care. Doorboys very friendly and helpful. Pool ok, rooms ok, beds are very comfortable. Think this hotel has been exclusive 20 years ago, today a bit - not shabby but nearly. The Breakfast very good and lunch not good at all. For the purpose of beeing a central base for attractions this hotel could be recommended for a few nights.

I made a mistake with the reservation and had to stay another night. Hotel could not extend at the same rate but down graded us to standard rooms at THB1050/night. Thirawat at the counter was most helpful. Needed to charge my GPS but hotel did not have a standard Motorola mobile phone charger. In today's world of mobile phones hotel should provide charging facilities.

The price was good for the facilities, nice pool, breakfast, disco, location. On the downside was rooms were a bit rundown in particular the bath. Walls very thin so quite noisy in the mornings, constant telephones going, they should turn down the volume on those and have a quiet word with maids to keep noisy chatter to a minimum. The water from the tap was scolding hot, children or slightly inebriated adults should not be allowed near the hot taps without supervision, you will also be charged for the ice pack to treat your nasty burns. In general though reasonable value and central location, but we d probably stay on the river next time though.

Stayed here with wife and 6yr old son. Had to change rooms as toilet seat badly stained. Room was near disco end of hotel and very noisey everynight - vibrates in room. Restaurant staff drag furniture around at about 2am in morning in preparation for breakfast - very loud and could be heard in our room above - probably same in most rooms. Bathroom was in poor condition and needs some TLC as does some furniture.Room clean.Corridor lights switched off in day so very dark.Carpets need replacing. Cowboy bar very good and food good. The frog hopping across restaurant floor was funny but not the cockroach on the french toast. Staff friendly. Very convenient location for War Cemetary and Kwai Bridge/Museum. Tried to charge us twice for breakfast despite pre-paying. Would not stay again. Good if you are not worried about sleeping Website pictures look better than real thing.

On arrival we were told to go to an annexe to the main hotel called River Inn. This was a shabby low rise block where we we shown two small double rooms which were very dated. I noticed the Inn was advertising rooms at 350-450 baht. I said the rooms were unacceptable as at the very least we requested 3 separate beds. I was originally told the main hotel was fully booked so I said they had better sort something out otherwise I would contact Sawasdee to find us another hotel. This threat worked as we then were taken back to the main hotel and given what we asked for in the first place, a room with three separate beds. The stay was fine but why try to cheat us out of the facilities we paid for and attempt to place us in a room charged at 350 baht?

Reservation service:
Fine but it seems you were also given false information about the availability of the correct room we ordered.

The hotel was fine if you re just staying in Kanchanaburi for one or two nights to go sightseeing and spend most of the day out and about . The rooms were generally clean, the food was adequate and customer service satisfactory. However, I think it is fair to say that this hotel has seen better days and is in need of refurbishment. The carpets smell a bit, the pool is run down and there's just a sense of 1970's Benidorm about it. Therefore, ok for a short visit, go elsewhere for a family/longer stay.

River Kwai Hotel was definitely the least memorable of the hotels that we stayed at on this trip. The room was very clean and comfortable though quite small. The hallways do have a very old musty smell and the carpeting is old & stained. The pool could do with a really good clean. Overall the service was fine & if you are looking for a hotel in the centre of Kanchanaburi and you are not over fussy you will find this hotel convenient as we did. We would probably look elsewhere if we were to return to Kanchanaburi.

Reservation service:
We used SiameServices for a number of bookings at different hotels during this trip and found them to be excellent, SiameServices were extremely helpfull when we had to reorganise one of our bookings due to a change in flight times because of problems with the new airport in Bangkok. Swadee staff could not have been more helpfull. Thank you to all at SiameServices for helping to make our trip so memorable.

River Kwai Hotel

Accommodation and facilities:
Booking accommodation in Kanchanaburi was the most difficult choice of our holiday. This was primarily because most of the Hotels are out of town, and we didn't want to stay at guest houses. We chose The River Kwai essentially because it was in town and gave us options. We didn't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere having to rely solely on the food and drinks of the Hotel we were staying in. Neither were we too fussed about luxuries. We just wanted somewhere clean, comfortable and quiet. Basically, we were very happy with our choice. The staff were very helpful and friendly, especially when you ve just spent time in Bangkok. We had read about the night club and Cowboy bar out the front of the Hotel and the noise generated by both. We had requested a room at the back of the Hotel, which we were given. The bar and club do generate ALOT of noise, and I can't begin to imagine what it must be like if you re in a room at the front of the Hotel. We couldn't hear any of it at the back. But what we did hear was the sound of the airconditioning units at the back of the Hotel. These weren't too bad - certainly better than hearing the noise from the front - but it was noise all the same. And that's not meant to be a complaint, just a comment. You try and pre-empt one issue only to be faced with another. Either way, with the Hotel backing onto the train line, we were well aware of both the 2am and 6am trains with their respective horns waking the dead. Breakfast was good, though more inclined towards Asian style. They have a coffee bar there if you need something more than the percolated stuff served at breakfast. And Kanchanaburi is on your doorstep. But you should be aware of the following - Kanchanaburi is VERY spread out. Any map you see of Kanchanaburi is completely out of scale. The Bridge over the Kwai is a fair way out. It probably took us at least an hour of walking after leaving the War Cemetary. We found ourselves believeing that the Bridge just HAD TO BE around the next bend in the road. And on and on it went until there was nearly a mutiny, and you find yourself thinking we can't stop now - it has to be close and then ten minutes later your still walking, still trying to ignore your sore feet whilst trying to maintain your positive outlook. The silver lining to this was that we found all the great places to eat along this part of the road. The road from Apples Guesthouse to the Bridge is where all the good restaurants and bars are (as well as all the bad ones). A Sawngtaew from the Bridge to the Hotel cost 100BHT, negotiable if you re willing. By the time we walked there and looked around we d have paid 1000BHT for the lift back. A Tuk-Tuk from the Hotel to The Resort (very nice for dinner) was 60BHT. Tuk-Tuks aren't as easy to come by in Kanchanaburi as they are in Bangkok. They all hang around the Bus terminal in the centre of town, which is not much use when you re out the front of the Hotel wanting to go the other way. If you re game, a motorcycle taxi is alot fun and actually very safe. When you come to realise that four people sitting calmly on a motorbike (one of them being a baby wedged in somewhere) is the norm in Thailand, being one of only two people on a bike is nothing. 40BHT per person out to the Bridge. As always prices are negotiable. The Tiger Temple is a must if you re into the idea of patting one and having your photo taken with one. If you do go, make sure you are there in the afternoon after 2.30pm. It's too hot for them earlier than this and they are very inactive. After 3-ish they are alot more active. Also, Erawan Falls is must-do. The track up near the top of the Falls takes you through water so you need footwear that can get wet or you won't get to the top. Also be aware that it takes a couple of hours to get to the top, longer if you stop for a while at each of the seven levels. You need to give yourself time to get up so you can get back down. Last bus leaves at 4.30. There's plenty of food at the entrance to the park. Buses leave the Bus terminal in Kanchanaburi every fifty minutes. It's a long way out - about 90mins on the bus. We hired a sawngtaew to drive us out (60mins). The driver was happy to wait for us once we got out there to then drive us back to kanchanaburi. We were there for nearly four hours! We negotiated 700BHT, but paid him 800.
