Nakhon Ratchasima, generally known as "Khorat", is Thailand's largest province located about 260km north-east of Bangkok. Inhabitants of the province are mainly engaged in agricultural activities that include farming of rice, sugar cane, tapioca, corn, jute, peanuts, sesame and fruits.
The main attractions in Khorat are Khmer ruins scattered around the province. One of Thailand's finest Khmer ruins can be seen here next to Mon and Lao sites. Wat Phra Narai Maharat houses a Khmer sandstone statue of the Hindu god Vishnu which is highly revered by local residents and is considered the province's most sacred object.
Apart from the famous statue of female heroine Khun Ying Mo Khorat is most well known for silk weaving and clay pottery products. The province has an abundance of natural attractions in its forests, hills, wildlife and waterfalls with it's most famous Khao Yai National Park, a preferred weekend get-away for Bangkok residents.
However the most interesting place it the province is the Phimai Historical Park one of the most important Khmer historical sites in Thailand. The ancient temple complex is in the centre of Pimai, giving the town an extraordinary feeling since old and new are completely combined and fitted together in harmony. Regular light and sound shows are held in the temple grounds.
