Surin is a big province on the Mun River Basin in the lower north-east of Thailand, 450km east of Bangkok. In ancient times it was an important part of the Khmer empire but today it is famous, locally and international, for its yearly held "Surin Elephant Round-Up". The province was always home to elephants and Surin people have a long relationship with these pachyderms. During the festival more than 300 elephants march through the city followed by a feast of fruits for the animals. They impress everyone with their cleverness and create a unique character of the province.
